Ground broken for luxury rental tower in Long Island City

Empire State Development Corp. Chairman Charles Gargano joined local elected officials and business leaders Wednesday for the groundbreaking of Avalon Riverview North, an upscale 39-story Long Island City housing complex is expected to produce more than 600 rental units.

The completion of the 600,000-square-foot building will end phase one of the Queens West Development project, Gargano said. "I am pleased to be here today and excited that we are taking another step forward in the redevelopment of Queens West, as we continue to bring this unique and valuable treasure on the East River to its full potential," he said. Gargano said the building should be ready for occupancy in late 2007 and that the building will also feature 2,750 square feet of retail space.
